How to get rid of the & ‘chipmunk sounds’ in your Camtasia videos

Date February 20, 2008

For a while now when I’ve recorded certain videos depending on which recording software I use, the audio playback has contained a bunch of garbled noise and ‘chirps’. I thought the problem was with my computer, but I’m glad to say I’ve found out how to fix this and the good news it isn’t a problem with my computer.

I happened to be surfing and came across Frank Bruno’s site, VideoMarketingTactics.com, and not only does Frank have a video demonstrating the problem, but he also shows how to fix it using a free application provided by Techsmith. In addition there’s a download link to get the application. The fix for the ‘chipmunks’ is fast and easy using this.

I’ll include Frank’s video below and also a link to download the application. Now your videos will be free of the ‘chipmunks’ once and for all. Enjoy and I hope this helps in producing your vidoes.

Here is the link to TechSmith To download the.EXE file that will remove “Chipmunk” and “garbled” video noises

Greg, does the application apply only to producing Camtasia videos or can I use it to elimanate the chipmunks post production also? (during playback.)

Hi Dave, good to hear from you!

From what I understood from watching the video, it has to be PRE production. Videos already completed and uploaded will still have a problem if they haven’t been run through the application.

I get alot of ‘chipmunks’ on some videos I watch, and others are fine, so I’m sure it’s a conflict with different players and recorders.

For instance when I use Camtasia 5, my videos play back fine to me, but I will still probably run the application just in case someone else may have a conflict with whatever player they’re using.

Hope that makes sense ; )

Up until about 2 days ago, I was immune to alvin and his friends invading my sound on video, downloaded or already on my PC, couldn’t really understand what all the fuss was about……. then i was struck with this plague and now i know !

At first I wondered what the problem was, it apears to just be the fact that i upgraded the flash player to version 9.0.115.0, the latest version, the problem version - So my advice is , if it aint broke etc.

This version has apparantly conflicts with camtasia video when saved as an SWF file, FLV’s seams to be OK

Anyway, thanks for the link for the fix, that’ll stop them chattering for now, and i’ll just have to remember in future that I must save all video’s from camtasia in the FLV format………. or until adobe decide to update their player.

    Hello Lee,

Thanks for the great additional information!

To be honest I’m still getting up to speed on the different formats and which is good for file size and quality, which will load to what service (Youtube, GoogleVideo) and so on.

For some crazy reason that I haven’t been able to figure out, the tutorials at the Techsmith site won’t load fully so I can’t watch them. I’m working on an older Dell laptop with a new 1720 on the way, so I’m hoping a lot of the problems I’m having will go away with the new machine.

I think it is mentioned in Frank’s video that it is the NEWER versions of Flash that are causing the problems. So for now we must march on and do what’s necessary to have quality videos for our viewers.

Again I really appreciate the comments Lee. Keep up the great work on your site and blog!

    Hello Greg

Sounds very strange about the Techsmith videos, they all seam to load fully on my ok, have you thought about clearing out the Temp file cache or increasing the available size, perhaps there is a temp storage problem !.. Just a thought

  6. Greg Swift said:

Oh yeah, did all that. It will load usually between 5-10 seconds and then just stop cold… wierd.

I’m sure there’s a way to solve the problem, just haven’t figured it out yet.

    Ahhh… gotta love computers ; )

Can’t wait for my new 1720 to get here!
